  • Use mnemonics to link words. One of the methods to build vocabulary is the Link Method that is used by making simple associations between items in a list and linking them with a vivid image containing the items. You can also use images to link a word in your language with a word in a foreign language. The Link Method was formalized by Dr. Michael Gruneberg. Dr. Gruneberg has produced language books in several language pairs to help students acquire the basic vocabulary needed to get by in the language. It is claimed that by using the Link Method, basic vocabulary can be learned in just ten hours. The Link Method is probably the most basic memory technique for vocabulary learning and it is very easy to understand and use. The method is effective by coding information to be remembered into images and then linking the images together.

  • Link items through a flowing story. The Story Method is quite similar with the Link Method however it links words with a story. The flow of the story and the strength of the images may give you the cues for retrieval.

  • Use an ancient and effective way of remembering information. The Roman Room technique which is also known as the Method of Loci is a very effective and sophisticated mnemonic system used to learn foreign languages. Using the technique requires a vivid imagination. In order to use the technique, start imagining a room that you are familiar with and then within the room are objects. Associate the images representing the information you want to remember with the objects in the room and then to recall information, simply take a tour around the room in your head and visualize the known objects and their associated images.
